About KelpTex
Fashion from the Ocean
Who
Runa Raay
As a Fashion Environmentalist, Runa Ray created KelpTex with a vision to address both environmental and societal challenges through innovative, nature-based solutions. Recognizing the damaging effects of invasive algae and seaweed on marine ecosystems and the broader environment, she identified an opportunity to turn these issues into impactful solutions.
Drawing from her background in fashion activism and sustainability, Runa developed KelpTex to transform algae into non-woven fabrics and packaging, creating a circular, eco-friendly alternative to traditional textiles. Her approach also includes utilizing invasive seaweed and repurposing the biomass left behind during industrial extraction, ensuring that every aspect of the process contributes to reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
By leveraging the regenerative potential of algae and seaweed, she supports sustainable practices that align with her philosophy of designing for a better planet.
Through KelpTex, Runa Ray merges her passion for environmentalism with practical, innovative solutions, revolutionizing sustainable fashion, and advancing blue innovation while fostering positive environmental and societal impact.
Our Collaborations
KelpTex has established key partnerships and collaborations with organizations at the forefront of ocean conservation and sustainability, including the Schmidt Ocean Foundation, Prince Albert II Foundation, The European Algae Meet and the United Nations Ocean Decade.
These collaborations are pivotal in advancing KelpTex’s mission to turn invasive algae into sustainable, non-woven fabrics, addressing marine pollution and environmental degradation. Together, we are working to protect marine ecosystems by repurposing harmful algae, fostering innovation in sustainable fashion, and promoting the circular economy. These partnerships enhance our ability to drive global change by merging scientific research, environmental advocacy, and creative design to create eco-friendly solutions for the future of our oceans.
